After completing his BSc Martin followed in his father's footsteps, deciding to train as a teacher. He attended the London Institute of Education, undertaking a Post Graduate Certificate in Education. Sadly, part way through his course, his father became very ill and Martin was asked to take over teaching classes in his place. This served very well as the practical element of his training and he was awarded his teaching certificate in June 1961.
