Having taken up the position of Head of Biology at Sir William Morris School Martin remained teaching there until 1972. As well as educating pupils in Biology and other sciences Martin was also teaching canoeing and accompanying groups on outdoor activities courses.

It was while at Sir William Morris that Martin discovered his love for brass and wind instruments, having been given a B flat tenor horn to attempt to repair. While knocking the dents out of the horn Martin also taught himself to play! This was the start of a lifelong interest in all musical instruments, but particularly the French horn.
